Announcing a WARM-n-WAVY WORKSHOP on Mentawai Island on the edge of Indonesia! Sept. 11-20, 2011
How it works: This “Warm-n-Wavy” Workshop is a two-part dealio. Part one is the RETREAT and a part-two is the WORKSHOP. You can sign up for the retreat at the Togat Nusa Retreat website which also has all the travel and logistical information you’ll need. You can sign up for the workshop below.
During this week-long workshop/retreat we’ll each build a board, surf, relax, and enjoy being alive. Because we’ll have more time, the plan is to actually finish each board. That means we will install fins and glass it too. As for free-time, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
The rendezvous point is Padang Airport on Sept. 11, 2011 where you’ll be met by a Retreat staff-member who will accompany you on the overnight ferry ride to Sipora Island and then on to Pitojat Island. The departure date from Padang Airport is Sept. 20. Again all of the travel and logistics are handled by special arrangements detailed on the Togat Nusa Retreat website which has tons of GREAT information.
Springback: In October, 2010 a 10′ tsunami once-again devastated this area. This is why I am exceptionally eager to announce that this workshop will be including a local-training Springback effort. Not one, but TWO local craftspeople will be offered free training and materials. One trainee will be nominated by Surfaid International, an awesome non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of people living in isolated communities connected to us through surfing. A second trainee will be selected by the owners of the Togat Nusa Retreat.
The idea is that these two local crafts people will be trained in the Strip & Feather method and be given enough materials to get their own custom surfboard businesses off the ground. The hope is that they’ll be able to supplement their income by selling boards that they build to future surf tourists. What’s included in the workshop price: One of Rich’s design templates (or custom designs are available for $50 arranged ahead of time), pre-cut internal frames, all the wood that you’ll need (sustainably harvested Paulownia and cedar), a rocker table, all tools (but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them), glues, and fasteners, FCS finboxes, epoxy & fiberglass, and board vents.
What’s NOT included in the workshop price: Food, lodging, (these are included in the retreat price – see the Togat Nusa Retreat website), local transport, travel insurance, tips, board shipping/excess baggage fees (bring a board bag suitable for the board you intend to build).
The Price: The WORKSHOP price is calculated as $400 + $50/foot US Dollars for which you can make a $150USD deposit below (you’ll be given the option to pay in converted international currencies during checkout). The price for the RETREAT is $1825 USD plus local transport of $350 which can be paid separately via the Togat Nusa website according to their terms and conditions.

The balance (full payment) must be received 2-months prior to the workshop (that means July 11, 2011). There may be a minimum number threshold and in cases where the workshop is SOLD OUT there will be a reserve list.
