Hey Mike, That's not too bad.  Should be an easy fix.

What you gonna fill the dent with???  is it a case of fill, glass then whack a sticker over the filled section???

StuMak 203 days ago

you git - just had to start the fix - filled the big split with a paste of resin and glass, and filled the shallow ones with a layer of resin only - might be able to sand later and maybe lam a layer of glass tonight...

Mike, You should be able to repair this in one night.  Depends if you care about matching the swirl.  If you don't, then:

Sand down with sandpaper

Spread thin layer of resin.

Apply a small piece of glass.

Spread thin layer of resin over top.

Apply a slightly larger piece of cloth.

Spread another thin layer of resin over the top.

Tape down a piece of transparency paper of a thin sheet of clear plastic (one used for packaging) over the whole area and tape it so if follows the contours of the board.  Make sure you work out all the bubbles as you tape down the plastic.

Let if cure and then remove the plastic.  If you got it right, you will only need to feather out the edges of the resin, but anyways, the board will be surfable regardless.

It is hard to tell the actual size of the dent from the photos, so if it large you will probably want to fill it.  Which means you should add some filler to the resin for the first coat.

yep - thats kind of what i've done - filled up the 2-inch crack with resin and layers of glass - theres loads of stress cracks running accross the board so figure another layer of glass over the area (after smoothing the filled hole) will sort these. I just don't trust that number of cracks to be water-tight. or maybe just another hotcoat might do it..?

like the idea of the transparency film but its too late now

Usually stress cracks don't got past the glass.  They should just be cosmetic.

My usual rule of thumb is to squeeze or push on the crack and if it is squishy, then you need to fix it.  But it is better to be safe than sorry.

redid the repairs today - too messy - rule of thumb "don't rush"!! the transparency film works a treat

the stress cracks seem firm, but surely if they're down to the glass the board could leak? I'd rather not add a layer of glass but last thing I want is for them to discolour, just a wipe of resin would just crack when the board flexes, hence looks like another layer would sort it once and for all

Alright now, I've sat back and watched this foamie post for long enough. Is this not a foam free site? One more post and the user gets a warning!  Do I have to come over there and put a few more dings it it? It is a lovely board though. (for you non sarcastic types, I am just kidding). No Im not, yes I am. No Yes No Yes. Oh now Im all conflicted.

Thats what i like to see, good strong, clear leadership !!!!   well sort of   B-)

StuMak 201 days ago

if i tell you the sanding block was a piece of english oak does that help...? !

ended up just redoing the hotcoat over the cracks, today it'll be sanded, then tested very shortly after..

also, note to self - never drop a freshly repaired board onto a wooden floor :o(

Fix 2 all done, board is great - time to get HWS number 3 and 4 underway

some sweet news - the courier firm sent me a cheque today as compensation for the damage - refunded me the cost of the board, plus the delivery fee - well pleased, so all its cost me was a couple of days and a half pint of epoxy for the repair  :0)
