Two balsa trees (6mo old) overwintering in the greenhouse.

so it can be done! got any extra seeds? I'll plant some here!

I thought it sounded strange that it was not cultivateable. how's the plant going to know? more like "not commercially viable to cultivate", probably.

I have a spanish lime tree in the backyard. they say they can't be grown as far north as miami. this one's 8 years old. my sapodilla died a few years back, but I think that's more where I planted it than anything.

Yeah, not sure what the big deal is.  Here's a guy growing them in Chiapas - smallscale, but still in a cultivation environment. http://www.rncalliance.org/epages/rncalliance.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=/Shops/rncalliance/Products/%22RNC%20project%20Mexico%2001%22

I'd probably agree with you on the commercially viable reasoning. The more things I try growing (that I'm not supposed to be able to in my area) the more I find out I can grow with very little trouble.  I wish I did have some extra seeds to send you, but just got six on Ebay. Since then I found this source  http://www.seedvendor.com/50--seeds-ochroma-pyramidale--quotbalsa-woodqu50.html.

However, if you're interested in some paulownia seeds or root cuttings I can send you some of those.  I'd be interested in seeing how they grow further south in Florida, as I may purchase some land for that exact purpose in the Sarasota/Arcadia area soon.

a few paulownia seeds would be cool. lotta open ground in arcadia. been through there several times, lived in sebring as a kid and went all over s. central fla. then. went to myakka river st. park about 4 years ago, still a lot of open ground around there.

Yep, the park at Myakka - never saw so many alligators in one place in my life!  I've taken a drive to the area a couple times to check out some pasture land there, and I agree - there is plenty.  I'm guessing that paulownia would grow more quickly down there than it does further north where it loses all its leaves and goes dormant in the winter.

Send me a message with your address and I'll get you those seeds.  I'll send you a root cutting too for comparison.  You won't believe how fast they shoot from there.
