NY/NJ Farmhouse Workshop

ANNOUNCING A 5-DAY WORKSHOP IN THE JERSEY COUNTRYSIDE (June 17-21, 2011)

The Workshop: In this 5-day workshop you will build your our own hollow wooden surfboard to the ‘ready for glassing’ stage. We will begin by learning the basics of surfboard design and use this new knowledge to build and fine tune the style of surfboard that is best for your skill level, type of surfing, and/or conditions you intend to surf in. Students will select their board from my line of proven designs. You will then set about cutting the internal framework, selecting the planks for the top and bottom, gluing those planks to the framework, railing out the board using my patent-pending Strip & Feather technique, attaching the top panel and then finish the workshop by doing the shaping and sanding. You’ll leave the workshop with the board of your choice ready to be fiberglassed (I will provide additional advice on glassing, fin placement and shaping, and leashloop/vent installation).

The Venue: Peters Valley Craft Center is a national center for fine craft education where people’s lives are enriched through the exploration and execution of fine craft. Located in the Delaware Water Gap, Peters Valley offers two to five day workshops in blacksmithing, ceramics, fibers, fine metals, photography, wood and special topics including printmaking, books & paper, drawing, and glass. Peters Valley Craft Center Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The PVCC is about 1.5 hours west of NYC.

You can learn all about this venue (such as pricing, food and accommodation, directions, etc.) by visiting the PVCC website.

SPACE IS VERY LIMITED to 5 participants so reserve your spot early using the Peter’s Valley registration process (see below). There will be a reserve list.

A little DailyStoke

Super-stoked to hear that the folks at DailyStoke are duly-stoked about the TreetoSea workshops.  A few months ago they sent a staff writer to participate in one of our Backyard BBQ style workshops and here’s what he had to say. I’m told there will be board ride reports, video, and other follow-ups as well. Check it out at DailyStoke.com

I had such a good time at this workshop and we got such good press and pics (a big thanks to Collin & Dave from the New England Surf Company) that I’m inclined to keep a slot open on each and every workshop for a member of the press. I’m even willing to waive the $400 workshop tuition. I’ve got several lining up on both the East and West Coasts and internationally. So if you’re a writer for a surf/wood/environment magazine or website, drop me an email and let’s see if we can get you on board!

Warm-n-Wavy Mentawai, Indo

Announcing a WARM-n-WAVY WORKSHOP on Mentawai Island on the edge of Indonesia! Sept. 11-20, 2011

How it works: This “Warm-n-Wavy” Workshop is a two-part dealio. Part one is the RETREAT and a part-two is the WORKSHOP. You can sign up for the retreat at the Togat Nusa Retreat website which also has all the travel and logistical information you’ll need. You can sign up for the workshop below.

During this week-long workshop/retreat we’ll each build a board, surf, relax, and enjoy being alive. Because we’ll have more time, the plan is to actually finish each board. That means we will install fins and glass it too. As for free-time, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

The rendezvous point is Padang Airport on Sept. 11, 2011 where you’ll be met by a Retreat staff-member who will accompany you on the overnight ferry ride to Sipora Island and then on to Pitojat Island. The departure date from Padang Airport is Sept. 20. Again all of the travel and logistics are handled by special arrangements detailed on the Togat Nusa Retreat website which has tons of GREAT information.

Springback: In October, 2010 a 10′ tsunami once-again devastated this area. This is why I am exceptionally eager to announce that this workshop will be including a local-training Springback effort. Not one, but TWO local craftspeople will be offered free training and materials. One trainee will be nominated by Surfaid International, an awesome non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of people living in isolated communities connected to us through surfing. A second trainee will be selected by the owners of the Togat Nusa Retreat.

The idea is that these two local crafts people will be trained in the Strip & Feather method and be given enough materials to get their own custom surfboard businesses off the ground. The hope is that they’ll be able to supplement their income by selling boards that they build to future surf tourists. Please check back here for more information on the local trainees as they are selected.

What’s included in the workshop price: One of Rich’s design templates (or custom designs are available for $50 arranged ahead of time), pre-cut internal frames, all the wood that you’ll need (sustainably harvested Paulownia and cedar), a rocker table, all tools (but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them), glues, and fasteners, FCS finboxes, epoxy & fiberglass, and board vents.

What’s NOT included in the workshop price: Food, lodging, (these are included in the retreat price – see the Togat Nusa Retreat website), local transport, travel insurance, tips, board shipping/excess baggage fees (bring a board bag suitable for the board you intend to build).

The Price: The WORKSHOP price is calculated as $400 + $50/foot US Dollars for which you can make a $150USD deposit below (you’ll be given the option to pay in converted international currencies during checkout). The price for the RETREAT is $1825 USD plus local transport of $350 which can be paid separately via the Togat Nusa website according to their terms and conditions.

SPACE IS LIMITED to 9 participants so reserve your spot early by making a $150 USD deposit using the PayPal button below. Deposit is non-refundable if you cancel, fully refunded if we do. The balance (full payment) must be received 2-months prior to the workshop (that means July 11, 2011). There may be a minimum number threshold and in cases where the workshop is SOLD OUT there will be a reserve list.

Up and running…

Almost done

Hi, and welcome to the new, almost finished, TreetoSea.org website. I’ve still got a page or two to complete, but you’ll notice there have been some changes around here. It is no longer primarily a social networking site, but is still a place to learn how to build your own wooden surfboard using my Strip & Feather method. Here you can find out about upcoming Wandering Workshops in your area, or sign up to attend one in a Warm-n-Wavy place. You can arrange to host your own workshop and take it for FREE, or buy some of my templates from the Template Shop.

Feel free to sniff around and get a sense for what’s it’s all about. If you do, you may notice the place still has that “new board smell” so please point out any glitches or typos you encounter in the sidebar.

I’ve got several workshops in the pipeline that I will start announcing on this homepage in the next few days, or you can subscribe in the sidebar to receive workshop announcements by email.

Till then, share the stoke,

Rich
